A room in our house is provided for interns. All meals are provided for interns.

Describe your farm operation

Amaltheia Organic Dairy is a diverse organic farm that mainly raises dairy goats and makes goat cheese. We also have pigs and raise vegetables. We farm 170 acres of pasture, hay, grains, and vegetables. The manure from the goats and the pigs is composted and spread on the fields and we graze the goats and pigs from May-October. The pigs are given the whey from the cheese making process to utilize all the by-products from our farm. There are also 3 high tunnels that we grow warm season vegetables in the summer and hardy spinach in the winter.

Describe the work to be performed by applicant

We are looking for dedicated individuals who would like to help us kid goats, feed mamas, feed babies, possibly milk goats. Later in the year, help with planting and crop work. Full time employment in the vegetable season is also available. We are looking for an intern, and/or full time employee who lives in the area. If interested in internship we have a bedroom in our home with living area separate and all meals are included.

What do you expect of a worker?

We would prefer applicants that have animal experience but will train. We would like applicants to have 1-2+ years of experience on a vegetable operation. We are also looking for a hard working person who can pay attention to detail and is a fast learner who wil work a full day's work 5 days a week.

Describe the learning and educational opportunities available to a worker

Job includes learning how to kid goats, milk them, learn about goat health, preventative measures, treatments for sick goats, etc. Also work with pigs and learn health and preventative measures with hogs. Job is hands-on and busy. We vegetable farm using a 82 hp tractor for tillage and an Allis Chalmers G for cultivation between rows. Interns will learn how to use these tractors along with growing transplants, making soil, growing high tunnel vegetables, transplanting and seeding crops, cultivation methods, harvesting, washing, and packing techniques. Also any wholesale and farmers markets sales experiences that are desired as well as sourcing inputs for the farm.
