Briefly describe your current occupation(s) and responsibilities and list previous agricultural employment and experiences. If you are currently farming or ranching, please state the size, type(s), and location of the operation.

I am currently the gardener for a 200 acre historic farm, managing the gardens and landscaping of this public park. At the farm I maintain an herb garden, cutting garden, greenhouse, apple orchard, landscaping around the mansion, large areas of turf, and multiple irrigation systems. I work regularly with volunteers and help run special events. I am also volunteering at a local 1.5 acre flower farm to gain more experience with a focus on production instead of display and to learn about marketing and business management.
Previously I have worked in horticulture on public and private lands, in land conservation and in plant ecology and restoration. I hold an advanced degree in Environmental Science with a focus on plant ecology.
I've decided to focus on farming in order to positively impact my community through restorative land management practices and by creating a product and environment that brings joy and a connection to nature to my customers. I am particularly interested in growing heirloom, unusual, and native flower varieties.

Please elaborate on the type(s) of agricultural operation you plan on running.

I am looking for 1 - 2 acres to start out. The primary crop will be fresh cut flowers, bouquets, and herbs. Markets will be wholesale, weekly business accounts, farmers markets, and weddings/events. Eventually I would like to add beekeeping and create body products from farm grown flowers and herbs. I am also interested in eventually expanding to include fruit orchards.

Elaborate on the farming practices you plan on using.

I plan on using organic practices but don't require the land to be certified. I would like to incorporate permaculture practices as well. Work will mostly be done by hand and small machine work. I would like to explore incorporating native plants for use as cut flowers and/or for seed production.

Transition Arrangements

Buy/Sell, Lease, Partnership, Open to other arrangements

If you are interested in another type of business arrangement, please explain

I would like to run my farm as an independent business but am interested in partnering with other businesses where we might mutually benefit, such as wedding/event venues or designers.

Please elaborate on the kind of additional training/information that would help you:

I have a lot of experience with growing but the business aspects will be newer to me so I'd be interested in learning more about financing, business management and marketing. I will also be new to the area so opportunities to plug into the local farming/event/design community would be helpful.
