Bio

I'm a real estate advisor and water rights consultant based in Helena, and I'm eager to help aspiring farmers and ranchers across Montana overcome the challenge of land acquisition. This desire comes from a recognition that demographics and economics present major challenges to our food production and distribution systems now and in the coming years. To overcome these challenges we need a new generation of innovative and ambitious farmers and ranchers, as well as strategic support and effort from other professionals and community members. I'm here to help aspiring farmers and ranchers develop strategies to finance property purchases, monitor the market for unique opportunities, evaluate risk, and ultimately become landowners. My three pieces of advice for those endeavoring to build their farming or ranching operation are: 1. Start small - The land base you hope to acquire for full build out of your operation may be well out of reach right now. But a 4,000 square foot vegetable garden or a 10 acre pasture can be a manageable first building block. 2. Take the long view - It might take you 5 years to acquire 1 acre. But with patience, baby steps can set the stage for exponential growth. 3. Think outside the box - Whether that's using non-conventional financing options, pursuing a property that's unlisted, or seeing opportunities that others don't.
