Briefly describe your current occupation(s) and responsibilities and list previous agricultural employment and experiences. If you are currently farming or ranching, please state the size, type(s), and location of the operation.

We are a young family in Livingston that is interested in exploring a part-time farming arrangement with relatively low maintenance crop(s) for side income and as a potential step toward toward a more seasonal/full-time farming business in the future. We both currently work full-time (engineer and writer), so our initial idea is to focus on garlic or a similar crop that is fairly easy, although we are open to ideas. We both have worked or volunteered on vegetable farms over the years, primarily in southwest Montana. We currently grow garlic and other vegetables in a large garden in town with cover crops and minimal tillage. We are also interested in an orchard arrangement, maybe in a better growing environment like the Bridger, Montana, area, but are focusing on the idea of garlic or other crops near Livingston.

Farming Practices

Please elaborate on the type(s) of agricultural operation you plan on running.

Market gardening focusing on garlic or similar crop(s) requiring relatively little maintenance and inputs. We would be the main/only source of labor, and would plan to sell mainly to wholesalers, restaurants and other distributors. We could start small (less than an acre) and potentially scale up and add crops if the arrangement is working well.

Elaborate on the farming practices you plan on using.

Fairly standard market gardening practices. For garlic, probably 30-inch-wide beds, mulched with straw, some element of cover cropping such as with mustard, minimal irrigation. Some mechanized help with forming beds could be nice, otherwise minimal tillage if it makes sense. Aiming for something like organic practices.

If you are interested in another type of business arrangement, please explain

Aside from leasing acreage, would consider partnership, such as managing a crop such as garlic for an established operation.
